Rob Larson
Robert Larson and I collaborated on the mosaic for Thread. I have always envisioned a collage for the cover art, as I wanted something that would tie all of the integral pieces of the puzzle together. I was hanging out at my friend Kirkebys’ gallery space in San Francisco when I came across one of Rob’s pieces. He creates these amazing rhythmic grids and patterns with stuff that he collects on his walkabouts through urban landscapes in California. Rob is from Santa Cruz and I got in contact with him. We met up and talked about a collaboration using the still and motion images from ‘Thread’ as the found element for his dynamic compositions. Rob was very serious about the whole process, thinking about a variety of approaches, trying to integrate his vision with mine. He figured out the grid and format of the collage, and decided on 7.5 by 3.5 feet. I started scanning and printing hundreds of tiny images. Rob built the canvas frame and proceeded painstakingly to build the giant collage. We filmed the whole procedure and it became the intro for the film. Rob has been showing his artwork in multiple solo and group shows and has just recently received The Rydell Visual Arts Fund. Rob also grew up skating pools and ramps around Santa Cruz. www.urbanexposure.com
