Jim Denevan

Jim Denevan, from Santa Cruz, is a surfer, chef, and one of the world’s leading land artists. He has been raking sand art into the vast lonely beaches between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay for over a decade. Jim’s art was recently recognized with shows at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and at PS 1MOMA, New York City. I met Jim through mutual friends a few years back. I always knew him as a chef and would see him cruising around farmers’ market buying local produce for the restaurant he was running. When I learned of his sand drawings I was immediately intrigued.  My working relationship with Jim started when The Surfer’s Journal needed some photos of Jim for an article they were running about him.
